It's not that they don't exist, they're just hiding, often masquerading as PL/SQL developer or other information systems jobs. As Oracle has become supposedly easier to manage and many companies have become leaner, explicitly titled DBA personell have been seen as an expensive luxury. The tasks have thus been spread among other workers, or in some cases, the DBA is just seen as a super-developer. So Daniel is basically right.
Personally, I've long maintained that many shops have about 10% DBA work (if they are doing any development), so look for a position in a big shop and keep your ears open to get into an official DBA position. If you like the work but don't care so much about the official title, go for a small or medium-sized shop and specialize in the skills you like - someone needs to put on the DBA hat, as well as know the specific business. You might not have much opportunity to get deep into the internals, though, you would more likely need to be able to deal with a variety of technologies and how they impact Oracle. A "versatilist" as a Computer World article put it, I think.
