The "magic" you are referring to is a solid backup and recovery plan, implemented for your database long before you encounter a problem. Each application has its own set of backup and recovery needs and your backup and recovery strategy should take these requirements into account. Once the backup and recovery strategy is designed to meet these requirements, it should be thoroughly tested. And by "it" I mean both backup *and* recovery.
