Anyway, for a bit of general background on Oracle, you can do worse than read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_database

Your best bet to start learning about how the product works is to read the Oracle Concepts guide at:
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/toc.htm

It's a bit of a mammoth read, but you will find it invaluable.
