I didn't notice any temp tablespace issues in 9i with work_areasize_policy is auto and an adequate pga_aggregate_target, as all of my sorts are in memory. Your pga_aggregate_target may be inadequate, or you may need to tune your statements.

Generally speaking you shouldn't set UNIFORM. Oracle automagically increases the extent size when needed.
Also there is not much gain in setting UNIFORM to anything bigger, than will be read from disk in one transfer, usually 1M.
