On Unix OIA uses /etc/oratab (var/opt/oracle/oratab on Solaris), listener.ora and tnsnames.ora for this purpose. If the database has a global_dbname set in listener.ora this will be used.

$ORACLE_HOME/network/log/nmiconf.log logs the details of the discovery process.
