RMAN and imp/ext with Oracle "pre-installed" from CD (or whatever) are the "supported" approaches for this, although I too have simply "copied files" in the past from time to time. However, you do run into the risk of underlying system library changes that can "get you" if the executables are not linked on the specific OS environment you are trying to run on. RH 7.3 -> 9 is a bit of a jump which would give me some concern.

If the matter is not readily fixable, you might try installing Oracle, and then then copying over just the instance specific files ( controls, oras, dbfs) to see if that resolves the problem. Received on Wed Jan 25 2006 - 03:55:26 CST
