I agree, except that to me, doing both a book and the self-test helped me pass the exams. Experience seemed to hurt, because I had to learn to ignore some of it, but I think that is more perceptual than actual, and perhaps a reflection of the skew of experience - but I would recommend downloading and playing with the products if you don't have the experience. The self-test helped me mostly in being able to rapidly recognize the "correct" answer, as well as reducing test anxiety simply because of the similar format. The book puts the information in context, especially those things that I've never seen in the real world, but some parts did seem irrelevant.
I took the 10g class at OpenWorld 2004, but didn't feel ready to take the exam after that, too much new to digest that fast, as well as too much other stuff going on.
