So now when I read in metalink that the problem that I'm facing in
10.1.0.4.x is fixed in 10.2.0.1 ... I can just set compatible forward
and reboot?



That sure beats upgrading/patching/opatch hell.

(I believe that oracle has a sanity check in it, such that if
compatible is set above the binary version, that the value is reduced
to the version of the binary).
