Hi,
I recently successfully installed 10.1.0.4 on AIX 5.2 (ML04) where there was an already running instance of Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 and haven't encountered any problems since. The goal was to test an application in parallel on the same server. For the installation of 10g, I used the already existing oracle owner and groups - of course with a different oracle home directory. I also used the same oracle inventory (listed in /etc/oraInst.loc, you can always rename this file if you want to create a new inventory). I did have some problems with dbconsole and Data Pump but those problems were related to bugs and had nothing to do with the existing Oracle 8i installation. Also, make sure you have enough free memory since 10g needs more then 8i, especially for the shared pool.
Good luck
