I have the following date "14-10?-2005". I need to convert the date in English.
Is there a simple way of doing it

I believe you have it set to Japanese. The date you have there is October 14th, 2005.
Set it to English. Look at nls date format. The date inside Oracle is stored in a binary format not language specific. You have it represented as a string.
