This would be the oracle executable (oracle on UNIX/Linux, oracle.exe on Windows/VMS). This executable spawns all of the processes (UNIX/Linux) or threads (Windows) used to access an instance, such as PMON, SMON, ARCH, LGWR, DBWR, etc. And there is more to the Oracle kernel, as listed here:
