What I find annoying is that if you explicitly use the 'pfile=' parameter, as described, it works -- but if you simply rely on the default location for init.ora, it ignores the control_files parameter therein (or, perhaps, it fails when trying to reconcile what is in the control files with one another, and with what is in the init.ora, and reports a misleading error...)
