Definitely read "The Goal" by Eliyaho Goldratt. It has nothing to do
with Oracle or databases, but everything to do with optimizing
processes. It is a 'business novel' in that it actually tells a nice
little story (conflict, romance, it has it all!) while making a point
about how to optimize systems. After reading it, the whole idea that
Cary was making really clicked into place.
You can download quite a few papers from www.hotsos.com (you need to
create a user account, but they won't send you many emails, about 6 a
year).
