And is it the norm that if you are *not* doing the strangest things to save a little money, people reply by informing you that you *could* do strange things?

In any event, I understand elementary things like the fact that parallelizing queries is pointless if you have one I/O channel. FWIW, I have many disks, enough that parallel execution improves queries by a factor of 10, and without it, my application would be DOA.
