You don't mention a version.  I'm going to assume Oracle9i (and Windows,
as it seems the Windows folk are the ones who usually don't recognize
that multiple versions exist <g>)



Check the Oracle9i Recovery Manager Reference for the purpose of the
'CROSSCHECK' command.  That might help solve your problem.
