Could you provide more information about your environment and what you
are doing.


Is your Oracle home and Oracle SID set ?
Are you using sqlplus or svrmgrl or ... ?
If you do "ps -ef|grep pmon",


    does it return a line with your Oracle SID ?
Try doing "env | grep -i ora| sort" to grab pertinent information.
Are there any errors in the alert log ?


And feel free to add more information that might help us help you.
