To protect from the loss of disk you would need to set your disk groups up correctly so that one two disk set mirrored the other. ASM works best it you give it dedicated disks and make sure that IO for a mirror set uses a different controller from the other set otherwise ASM might not know that two disks (partitions) you gave to it are physically on the same disk.

But ASM is a good way to stripe and/or mirror if you do not have a good LVM or do not have a knowlegable System Administrator.
