In the mid-80's there came a point where I was saying this a lot, because I had experienced certain R products, but eventually had more work with the hierarchical products that were the mainstays. So I would use R concepts for design on the H products, but could honestly say I preferred the R products.
But in general, I think your point is both valid and self-supporting, as people will tend to stay with what they like. Or not, if they buy into the buzzword thing. I could easily see young'uns learning newer stuff in school and then getting work in older stuff, for example. Which might have happened to me had I not been exposed to relational stuff first as work, then later in continuing school.
