There are some interesting exceptions with read-only tablespaces. See bug 4125093 on metalink for one.

It is important to understand controlfiles and why they are so critical. Mark said it twice, and I'll repeat it: read the recovery manuals. You might also alter database backup controlfile to trace and examine the resulting file. And don't just think about it, try it!
