As someone who is more likely to be a helpee than a helper on this forum, I find method 3 usefull and emotionally neutral.

If its an obvious and easy-to-find manual I might feel silly (Doh! I could have found that myself), but often there are a boatload of possible manuals. These days tahiti and askTom with their search features are a great help, but it still isnt always easy to suss out just which F-ing manual should be R-ed.
