In case this is of any use to anyone...

I tried running imp directly from the command prompt (rather than in a batch file) and the whole operation completed in mere minutes! Running the utility like this prompts you for various parameters, including buffers and what have you. I guess I set the buffer size to significantly larger than the default. As Frank suggested, I did not use commit=y as well.
