"so his cold backup should be good"

it certainly sounds worth testing, perhaps by restoring and opening a subset of the database, such as the system, sysaux, undo and perhaps one app tablespace's datafiles and recovering this backup subset as a different database?

if file#1 requires more recovery ... then the "cold" backup might not be as cold or as good as he thinks.

inline compression in 10g RMAN should catch his interest.

he might not have enough room to produce rman backupsets on a disk staging area, but if he were to go the route of altering some tablespaces to read only and not backing up every tablespace in every backup set, he might find his backup windows drop down to a 12 hours a week, instead of 12 hours a day.

I like saying "sure, we can use 73 GB drives. we'll just short-stroke them and save half for backups".
you're pretty much guaranteed to have enough space for staging backups on disk, then.
