I totally agree with you concerning the potential performance issue,
but that's probably a different issue than the original.  Also, if the
conversion happens elsewhere, NOT in the database,  then the use of
index is still possible.



But then the implementation could be technically too difficult?  I
don't know, not having done it myself.
