You Americans should move here to the good old Europe to learn what is the real meaning of phrase "housing costs are so high". :-) One can rent a decent apartment in SF Bay Area for less than half of price of the similar one in any given big german city and they (Americans) are still complaining. ;-)

Roughly DBAs according to the travel required could be split to two groups:

  1. company own DBAs which are usually not travelling a much (with exception of big companies that didn't centralised their IT).
  2. DBAs for rent (from companies like Oracle, Accenture, Logica, ...). These are generally travelling a lot.
