By some job counting measures, the Oracle DBA role is shrinking. What actually is happening is the job functions are being distributed to other job roles, since there's a lot of stuff to actually do.

It kind of depends where you are, too. Classical DBA roles require fairly large environments, so they tend to be in large cities. In Southern California or the SF Bay area, for example, (see monster.com for salaries), but the housing costs are so high it is not worth it unless you already are there. Expect to spend a couple of years as a junior, too (unless you can cross sideways somehow, unlikely).

There is definitely a subculture of travelers. It depends what exactly you wind up doing.

Don't take it personal, but I've seen some people really do lousy trying to go directly from NA and SE positions to DBA. It's a different mind set. Lot's of opportunities in development, maybe you should try that and keep your eyes open to see what's what. Then if you still think you want to be a DBA, you will be in an ideal position.
