They have been telling you fairy tales or you heard wrong. Any ODBC
driver for Oracle needs the full client, with the exception of
possibly Merant.
Mickeysoft's ODBC driver definitely doesn't work with Oracle without a
client.
You definitely need to install the ODBC driver and the full client in
a separate ORACLE_HOME and set up the registry string var TNS_ADMIN
(in hklm\software\oracle) to point to the correct directory holding
tnsnames.ora
