Think of it this way:

  1. Installation of Oracle9i RAC

In a RAC-compatible environment is a breeze. No problem. Easy as pie. Virtually no difference between a single instance and RAC install.

B) Getting a RAC-compatible environment

This is such a ruddy pain that you are encouraged to take a course around that. The catch is that even driver-versions can cause an environment to fall out of favor.

Unfortunately most of Oracle's relevant courses assume that you have a RAC-compatible environment. One workshop that does give some feeling around this is available at http://www.psoug.org

Doubtful. Not many 'normal' file systems allow several computers to write concurrently to them without choking.

You don't ned RAW. But you do need something compatible with your OS that will permit clustered concurrent access.
