If NAS youve got the basics. If SAN you are going to need to think fiber too. I'd take a serious look at the new NetApps as they can be configured as both SAN and NAS giving you the best of both worlds at the same time for your lab.
Pay a lot of attention to the NIC cards. Cards not compatible with RAC, like the NetGear 311 can drive you crazy. I got some 312s and they were worthless.
With respect to Linux go with RedHat EL AS 3 update 2. The fixes will make life far easier for you and the cost substantially lower than dealing with Solaris and Veritas.
