Have you tried AskTom? A lot of discussion there related to your
question such as this one:
Regarding your sort performance "which you're not happy about", how large is your PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET? If you perform large sorts and this is not sufficient then your response time will really be terrible. A check on your multipasses will be helpful.
