Hi Howard,
Well, I have no idea how, but I was finally able to (kind of) get to the point where I was able to get a cloned instance (CTEST1) working, pointing to files in e:\Cloned\...
I say "kind of" because after all of that thrashing around, I went back to the original/source database/instance (TEST1), and found that instead of it pointing to files in e:\oracle\oradata\..., that original instance was also pointing to e:\Cloned\...
I have no idea why, but I'm going to try to go through this exercise again, from scratch. I think that this problem may've occurred because I ran the new CREATE CONTROLFILE .SQL file when I was connected to the TEST1 database instance :(.
So, if I'm understanding how the cloning procedure you have works (in very simplistic terms):
At this point, both the source and target databases are "valid", but they both have/use the same database instance, so only one of the databases can be used at a time, and so the source database is shutdown, and the target database is running. So, the next step is to create a new database instance:
Once the new database instance is created, then both the original source database instance and the new database instance can be running at the same time, with the source database instance pointing to the original file locations, and the new database instance pointing to the target location.
Is that about right???
Thanks,
Jim
