As far as your RMAN troubles connecting when archive destination is full, make sure arch and adump are in separate file systems. Otherwise the RMAN login gets stuck because it can't write out the small little audit trace file that records the / AS SYSDBA login. Of course you can always delete a few files in adump, but then it's a race to see if you can login before arch fills the mount point again. I learned all this the hard way.
