You might look into partitioning. Each month you would partition off those closed sales records into another tablespace. Backup the tablespace and then take it off line and then delete it. But I think Ana's idea is better unless you really really have gobs of data. To get it back you would have to put the file back and bring the tablespace on line.

You would have to try it.(on a development system)
