If you means doing something like :
login to the 8i user on the sever
exp username/password_at_ALIAS owner=etc etc
where ALIAS is a 920 database then you might have problems.
There is a bug which stops 817 exp exporting from a 920 database (at least when exporting on an HP box using 817 from a 920 database on HP or on Windows !). The fix is to upgrade 920 to 9204 whereupon it 'just works'. The workaround is to use 8.0 exp to export form the 920 database - that 'just works'.
You don't need to run the 8i catexp on the 9i database by the way, it just works when the 9i catexp has been run. (At least, I didn't need to). (Same for using 8.0 exp, the 9i database doesn't need the 8.0 catexp to be run.)
The above refers to 64 bit Oracle 920 running on 64 bit HPux 11.00 by the way. The 817 is also 64 bit on 64 bit. Windows - well, that's something else altogether.
Cheers,
Norman.

Just use the 8i client on the "somewhere else" server. That would
require
more than just using an 8i export utility though. You'd need to run the
8i catexp.sql script to make sure exp sees the views it expects to see
in
the 9i database.
