ERROR: ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress

hello everybody

i installed oracle 9i on redhat 9, just following up the instruction on www.tldp.org. soon after installation, i saw the database working. yet, after one reboot, it does not work at all, showing just error message - ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress. i tried to start database using (lsnrctl start) and (dbstart). the only thing i got was the above error message. of course, i am a newbie.
based upon your expertise on oracle, what would i have missed and could you tell me?
