In the book on Oracle Design, Dave Ensor and ?? Stephenson (I think - I only 'know' Dave) gives a very slow load time as one of the major drawbacks for IOTs.

Ok, I know the book is aimed at Oracle 7.3/8.0, but it could still apply.

Not much help I'm afraid, but it could be relevant.
