Removing SID?

i un-installed Oracle9i db and want to re-install it.
when the installation asks for a SID i enter the same SID as in my old
installation. However the systems says SID already exists.
How can i remove the SID of the previous installation?
Do i also have to remove soething in the registry? Oh yes, i work on a Win2k
workstation.
