How large is large?
You should be looking at:

  1. The implications of running export with consistent=N. This may well be unwise, depending upon the purpose of the export.
  2. Running exports at a time of relatively low activity in the database - or tables concerned.

By the way, if this is part of a backup strategy, please be aware that export can only ever form that; *part* of a backup strategy - and not the main part at that.
