Sometimes, however, you can use a binary for a different platform. People used to use the SCO Unix binaries on Linux/i386 before Linux/i386 was supported, and it is possible that the Solaris/SPARC binaries also work on Linux/SPARC.
Of course doing this in a production environment may not be a terribly bright idea.
