In common with most other Indo-European languages, it must be said. Portuguese is one of the oldest and people often think it's derived from Latin. 1/2 of it is direct from old Greek. The rest is a mix of Fenician, Arabic and old Latin. With a bit of extremelly old pre-Indo Asturian (nowadays totally dead) thrown in. That's where it got all the "sh" sounds written with an "x" or "s". No, I'm afraid Spanish (or more correctly: Castillan) doesn't get into it at all. Although they may appear similar to the un-initiated.

When I was a young pup learning the ropes in the English language, one of the texts I studied from started by proving that "Oh, Sim!" in Portuguese was DIRECTLY related in its Indo-European roots to its English translation: "Oh, Yes!". How's that? :)
