Without wanting to sound flippant, I suggest you go back to him and ask for the resources required to analyze the problem. Perhaps a minimimu of 4 man weeks with a complete replication of the system in a test environment. That should make him get over it.

Seriously, I understand that he's a little nervous about the failure but when systems get that big the chance of finding the cause of a once off (or intermittent) failure is nearly impossible.

Even if you did find the cause do you think he'd accept it, particularly if it's a glitch in the load data caused by some random write error.
