I got an even better one:

statistics are gathered via a batch manually executed by production DBA (because some heavy loads happened...bla)
reading the big tables takes some time, so production DBA thinks the process hangs, kills it and leaves half of the tables with and half of the tables without statistics

results in very stange behaviour of the application
