I have walked down a similar Path on two instances on one of them We called HP in to do some scanning of the hardware ,It was time consuming but it came out that there were some hardware errors we could not find

If you are stuck and there is no going forward or backward reinstall Oracle while waiting for whichever solution will releive you .I remember Oracle using my home number and calling at midnight when I left the office at 9Pm and I finally changed Oracle Home to get out of the quagmire.
