I think what Sybrand was getting at was that there were no error messages given or information about db versions etc. just the statement 'everything messes up'. If we knew in what way it messed up we might be able to help more. He (like me) isn't a huge fan of GUI tools since they often make it easy to get things wrong and hard to see what it is you've done.
What I would do to get your strategy to work is to run a script to drop and recreate all the users in the target database that you care about (so they have no objects but all their rights etc). After I had run this then and only the would I do an import (and i'd only import the schema's I was interested in. In otherwords if you have intermedia etc users in both databases there is zero point in mporting them.
You should also note that an export is at best a logical backup of the data as it was at a specific point in time. if you backup the data as well as export it you will greatly minimise your chances of data loss.

I'd go for
technet.oracle.com (free reg required)
asktom.oracle.com (Q & A site with a world expert)
tahiti.oracle.com (all the docs - especially the concepts manual)
These newsgroups. The more information you supply the better response you tend to get. I'd say these groups have given me many thousands of dollars worth of training and info over the years. (You might need a 70's music filter though :( ).
