Actually I said I am happy with 20 to 50 extents. This is because if I had many more it would show that my sizing estimates were wrong.
I also said (and I think this is perhaps more important than an absolute number) that I like to see growing object allocate an extent every 2 to 4 weeks. The reason for this latter is that it makes it so much easier to predict future data volumes and to watch for anomalous behaviour.
