It is not mysterious - it is probably the most reported issue in the last year - There is a known 'bug' when using 8.1.7 with a Pentium 4 equipped PC ( you got further than many have).. Search the newsgroups ( comp.databases.oracle.* ) or check on Metallink for the work around.
