Sorry -not answering your question. But why *wouldn't* you install the
service pack?!
But the answer to your question is no, not that I'm aware of. I once installed Oracle onto a nice clean W2K box, having forgotten to apply the service pack. And everything worked fine.
I presume there *is* actually a Listener running? And we'd need to see your listener.ora and your tnsnames.ora to pursue the matter.
