  Well, there are always pros and cons. I like Rman mainly because it is quite flexible. You can create/replace/delete/list scripts. You can do a database clone out of it. You can do incremental backups (faster in a sense than rollfoward the redo archives), check corruption automatically. Also, you can parallel write to disks. Yet the whole pros is not yet completely discovered. The only con (I think) is to manage the Rman repository.

  Management trust the certified Rman better than hand-written, old-fashion scripts. I started doing OS hotbackup but then I switched.

  Your question of how to backup rman repository, I would say just  use an old-fashion manner since it's not big generally.

  Some Oracle tech supports are newbie themselves in certain areas. But sometimes you do get good guys who really help.

  Anyone knows where to get the whole list of advantanges of Rman over old-fashion backup (if any ever written).
