Information on metalink regarded to this problem says that this probably has to do with ORACLE_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not correctly set for the application.
In 8i libclntsh.so is a symbolic link to libclntsh.so.8.0 (libclntsh.so.1.0 for 8.0.X)
The Client Shared library (libclntsh.*) is created by running $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh if it does not exist. The symbolic link is automatically made by the genclntsh command.
Search on Metalink for more issues with libclntsh.so.8.0.
