To add to Sybrand Bakker's remarks:
If you set the SID to a length >4 characters on windows e.g. xxxxdev &
xxxprod
then Oracle will throw ora-1102 on 2nd instance startup due to the 8,3
DOS naming
limitation.
In this scenario starting up with the correct init file depends on which
instance
you startup first.
