I do not thing that 1000MB or even 500 MB is a good datafile size for 0.5 TB data warehouse. Maybe you should consider larger datafiles, because 500 (1000) data_files would be a nightmare to administer. You can have 5000MB data files (100 of them), but you should carefully plan your partition policy for your biggest tables to improve read performance.
You must begin with internal analysis and after that, you can move to deciding data files layout.
You'll need to know your enemy (the biggest tables), before throwing out numbers like 500 MB, 1000 MB.
Maybe you have been already doing that, but from your question it was unsure.
